Career Description

The learning that takes place during the Music Technology Certificate will help students have the foundational skills they need to begin producing, recording, and distributing music on their own or working as an assistant at a recording studio. In addition, the background in music industry may be helpful in a variety of jobs including film/tv production and advertising.

Program Information

The Music Technology Certificate program provides training in music production, recording, digital music notation, working with microphones, mixers, and speakers, and background knowledge in music industry. This certificate is designed for anyone who wants a background in using music technology, for AA and other non-degree and degree-seeking students who want an additional certificate in music technology, as well as for Music AFA students who want to supplement their degree with Music Technology proficiency. Students also have the opportunity to become an Avid Certified User for Pro Tools after completing the audio production classes in this certificate.

Program Outcomes

Graduates will be able to:

  • Use digital audio workstations, audio interfaces, and MIDI controllers to produce, record, edit, and mix music;
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of microphones, mixers, and live sound setups used to perform or record music;
  • Complete all the steps of a recording/production project from beginning to end using Pro Tools;
  • Create backing tracks consisting of drums/percussion, a bass line, and multiple chord progressions;
  • Demonstrate a proficient understanding of note values, durations, tempo, and meter through the use of quantization;
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of various elements of the music industry including streaming, radio broadcasting, music retail, music recording, publishing and songwriting, music management, musical theater, and music education; and
  • Create sheet music documents that are accurate, legible, and readable in paper and on electronic devices.

Special Program Requirements

In addition to the program requirements, students must meet the following conditions in order to graduate:

  • College Cumulative GPA Requirement: cumulative grade point average (GPA) of credits attempted and completed at CLC must be at least 2.0;
  • College Technical Core GPA Requirement: cumulative GPA of credits attempted and completed towards the technical core of the diploma or degree must be at least 2.0;
  • Residency Requirement: students must complete 25% of their credits at Central Lakes College.

Certification

Students are eligible to take a test to become an Avid Certified User for Pro Tools after completing the audio production classes in this certificate.
