Music Performance Certificate

Career Description

The continued practice and development of musical performance skills will allow students to work as a freelance musician or be hired to teach their instrument in a private lesson setting. It will also lead to more opportunities to perform as a paid musician at various establishments and in musical productions and recordings.

Program Information

The Music Performance Certificate program develops students’ proficiency in musical performance on a primary instrument/voice. Students will perform in a variety of ensembles each semester while also taking private lessons with college faculty. In addition to the required courses, students will complete one of the following: • Perform a recital • Perform as a featured soloist in an ensemble • Record a solo or musical composition that features the student This certificate is designed for students who are getting an AA degree or other degree that want to continue performing music beyond high school at the collegiate level.

Program Outcomes

Graduates will be able to:

  • Interpret and perform musical literature with appropriate style and sound;
  • Engage in the creative process of interpretive performance;
  • Perform solo musical works with proficiency;
  • Contribute leadership and group effort within their section of the ensemble;
  • Respond critically to the compositions being prepared and to the quality of the performance;
  • Demonstrate the ability to read and write basic music notation; and
  • Explain what each of the elements of musical notation represent.

Special Program Requirements

In addition to the program requirements, students must meet the following conditions in order to graduate:

  • College Cumulative GPA Requirement: cumulative grade point average (GPA) of credits attempted and completed at CLC must be at least 2.0;
  • College Technical Core GPA Requirement: cumulative GPA of credits attempted and completed towards the technical core of the diploma or degree must be at least 2.0;
  • Residency Requirement: students must complete 25% of their credits at Central Lakes College.
