Two CLC Welding students place in competition

Two Central Lakes College welding students placed in top spots at a recent “Behind the Mask” Welding competition held at St. Cloud Technical & Community College.

Student Alan Pietila placed 1st in Gas Metal Arc Welding. Student Rod Berg took 3rd in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding. There were a total of 103 participants from several different schools competing.

“The competition was intense with a lot of good schools and competitors. Students really had to do everything perfect or they were eliminated,” said David Otto, CLC Welding instructor. “I am very proud of Alan and Rod for making it to a podium spot. It is such a good experience for all students to participate no matter the outcome. Getting a welding job is going to require some kind of a weld test and this competition replicates that to a tee. This experience teaches the students how to overcome nerves and perform to their potential.”
