CLC’s Verse Like Water to host Juan Felipe Herrera

herrera_si-303x335Central Lakes College’s Verse Like Water program presents Juan Felipe Herrera, the first Latino to be named US Poet Laureate by the Library of Congress.

Herrera will hold a reading at noon on April 22 in the Chalberg Theatre, Brainerd campus. This literary event is free and open to the public, and a book signing/meet and greet will follow the poetry reading.

Herrera is a poet, professor, and social activist, and he is the first Latino ever to be named US Poet Laureate by the Library of Congress.

“For decades, Juan has been a joyful, inexhaustible, writer, teacher and social activist, and though his work radiates many themes, he dreams poems that above all seek to palliate suffering, especially that of migrant farm workers,” said Jeff Johnson, CLC English instructor and proprietor of Verse Like Water program at the college. “His literary imagination is not concerned with inhabiting an America stretching sea to shining sea, but a much larger one–north, central and south where we are all brothers and sisters.”

The event is sponsored by Five Wings Arts Council and Minnesota Public Radio.
