Students, staff, faculty and community members are invited to attend the next Verse Like Water poetry reading event starting at noon Friday, Oct. 23 in the Chalberg Theatre, Central Lakes College Brainerd campus.
The featured poet is Terrance Hayes, whose work has earned him a National Book Award. Last fall he was named a MacAurthur Fellow in their grant series. His poems have appeared in literary journals and magazines including The New Yorker, The American Poetry Review, Ploughshares, Fence, The Kenyon Review, Jubilat, Harvard Review, and Poetry. His poetry has also been featured on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer (Blueflower Arts).
The Oct. 23 reading will be at noon, a book signing at 12:45 p.m. and the workshop on creativity and the imagination at 1:30 p.m.
“Terrance Hayes is one of the premier African-Americans dreaming poems for us in the 21st century. He has won numerous awards, including a National Book Award, and a MacArthur Genius Grant. Terrance is also a professor of genius at the University of Pittsburg, and he is also a musician and painter,” said Jeff Johnson, proprietor of Verse Like Water and CLC English instructor.
Verse Like Water, the visiting poet program of CLC, is sponsored through a grant from Five Wings Arts Council and Minnesota Public Radio, and is free and open to the public.
