Volleyball team to 8-3

Defeating nationally-ranked Mesabi Range (No. 6 as of 9-5-12) and conference stalwart Anoka -Ramsey 3-1 in a triangular meet Saturday, Sept. 15, the Central Lakes College volleyball team pushed its record to 8-3 on the year. Pine River sophomore Crysta Christensen knocked down 12 kills vs. Anoka-Ramsey and Brainerd sophomore Alanna Hansen did likewise in the win over Mesabi. Christensen added 11 digs and four blocks in the victory over Anoka-Ramsey. Hansen knocked down nine kills to go with three ace serves and three digs. Crosslake freshman Sarah Miller led CLC with 15 digs and Monticello freshman Keiana Wurtinger added 14 set assists. Against Mesabi, Pierz freshman Lindsay Monson (shown) added 10 kills, five digs and seven blocks.
Christensen contributed nine kills and 16 digs. New Ulm sophomore Haley Hornick led the Raiders with 26 digs and Little Falls freshman Tiffany Hartung added 25 set assists. The Raiders neutralized Mesabi’s tall veteran Morgan Hanson of Cherry and earned the big win over the Norse with outstanding team play and veteran leadership plus aggressive performances by several first-year stand-outs. CLC starts a long span of games away with Wednesday’s trip to Northland, another nationally ranked team (No. 6 last week), before going to Hibbing Friday and Rainy River (International Falls) Saturday.
