Central Lakes College instructor Bruce Klopfleisch and Gloria Palmer of Staples-Motley High School are partners in an effort to teach practical financial management skills to high school students. Bruce is helping incorporate his curriculum from the CLC course “Money Management Skills” into Gloria’s resource management class at the high school. He is doing the same for schools in Brainerd, Little Falls, Crosby-Ironton, and Pine River. The effort stems from the College in Schools program offered by CLC to award college credits to high school students. Money Management Skills is a one-credit class offered in the College and Career Studies cluster at CLC. Students learn about financial aid and college loans, tuition, room and board, insurance, credit reports, ID theft, making car payments, bank accounts, and budgeting. Guest speakers come in for more real-world insight. The Staples-Motley school project was featured in the March 29 Staples World newspaper.
