Gen. John W. Vessey Jr, namesake of a CLC Foundation scholarship fund, passes away

Gary PattonOur hearts go out to the family and friends of Gen. John W. Vessey Jr, who passed away Thursday night. Gen. Vessey’s legacy lives on through the CLC Foundation, which is home to The General and Mrs. John W. Vessey Scholarship fund.
Gen. Vessey’s legacy stretches much farther than central Minnesota. Here is an article the New York Times wrote on him following his passing:
The General and Mrs. John W. Vessey Scholarship fund was established nearly 25 years ago. It is awarded annually to an honorably discharged veteran of the US Armed Forces furthering their education at Central Lakes College (then Brainerd Community College); preference is given to disabled veterans. More than 30 students have been the recipients of their scholarship fund.
Hear from some of the students who were recipients of The General and Mrs. John W. Vessey Scholarship fund:
“I am sincerely honored to have been selected as the recipient of the General and Mrs. John W. Vessey Scholarship. Thank you for your generosity which has allowed me to, as an disabled veteran with 21 years of service and a cancer survivor to continue my education in natural resources. As I complete my education at Central Lakes College, I am very thankful for receiving your thoughtful gift. Because of your scholarship, I will be able to purchase the required material for all of my courses this semester, which will make my studying for class that much easier.Thank you again for your thoughtful and generous gift.”

“Thank you for your generous scholarship. I am in my final semester of school for my Associates Degree in Nursing. Being a single mother of two, going to school full time is difficult and finances are always tight. Thankfully I have been able to use my Veteran’s benefits to attend school and help from generous scholarships such as yours help ease the rest of the financial burden. Thank you so much!”

“I am so pleased to be selected again for this scholarhsip in both of your names. This means so much to me to be selected again from a dedicated military family. This scholarship will indeed help me in many ways to earn my degree in the Criminal Justice field. In honor of this award, I will hold the excellence standard bestowed by my fellow military brothers. Thank you again.”
