General information on
taking a web based course What is a 'Web-Based'
Course?
A Web Based course is a course taught using the Internet. The
information needed to study for this course is posted on the web. You
can access this information from any location using an
Internet-ready
computer. This gives you an opportunity to take this class from anywhere
and study at a time convenient to you.
What is required to
take a Web-Based course?
A Web Based course is NOT for everyone. You should have the
following:
- Internet Explorer 5.0 or Netscape
Navigator 6.0 or higher
- Significant computer skills
- Must be capable of accessing the
Internet
- Have reliable e-mail access
- Know-how to send and receive e-mail
attachments
- Have basic word processing skills
- Must have internet access 6-10 hours
per week
Do I need to own a
computer?
Not necessarily, but it is strongly
recommended. If you own a
computer you will have the flexibility to study around your own schedule
at home.
However if you do not own a computer, you
must realize that you need to spend 7-10 hours per week at one of the
following places, on each course you have registered.
Possible locations of computer
access
- CLC computer Lab
- Another colleges computer lab
- CLC Computer Commons
- Public Library
How does it differ
from a traditional course taught at CLC?
Taking a course on the web is NOT easier than taking it in a
traditional format. It requires strict discipline and steady
self-pacing. If you are a natural procrastinator, you will have a rough
time keeping up.
In a traditional 3-credit class, you
would spend three hours a week in class, and several hours outside of
class preparing.
Be prepared to spend just as much time
taking this web class. The only difference is that you have the
flexibility to choose when to spend time on your course(s). You will
need to work each week so do stay on task!
How do you
Register?
The same way you register for any CLC class.
Visit the
Registration site for more detailed information
The ADD and DROP policies
and other rules for courses are the same as a regular traditional
course.
Do we meet our
Instructor? Is there an on campus orientation session?
You may or may not need to meet your Instructor. It depends
on the individual Instructor. Please check the Instructors handout for
that specific class.
Each individual Instructor decides
whether to have the on campus orientation or not. This session will
usually be scheduled during the first week of the semester. Please check
the Instructors handout for specific class requirement.
How do I contact the
Instructor?
- By e-mail.
- By FAX
- By Telephone.
- Meet Instructor during posted office
hours
- In addition, you can set up a personal
conference with the Instructor by appointment.
