What Happens During The School Year?

In School Curriculum

The Central Lakes College Upward Bound Academic Advising Program provides students with enrichment opportunities to help participants be successful academically and go on to a college or university.

One on One Advising:
Upward Bound Staff will meet with the participant in the participant’s school as often as the staff see fit during school hours.  These meetings will last between 15-30 minutes and will include:

- One on one individualized instrusive advising, career counseling, and supplemental instruction

- Educational support and encouragement

- Personal coaching

- Mentoring 

- Personal and Academic Planning and Counseling

- Attendance to these One on One’s is required

Tutoring: Upward Bound Staff will provide tutoring on a weekly basis in all project Target Schools. Tutoring provides Upward Bound participants to receive additional help and assistance with their studies. All students are required to attend. Students who are receiving a grade below a "C" in any class are required to attend. More frequent tutoring can be available upon request.

Saturday Academy Curriculum

Upward Bound students attend monthly academic sessions on Saturdays at Central Lakes College Brainerd and Staples Campuses. At these events, students receive:

Instruction: Students participate in writing courses, ACT preparation, and College planning seminars taught by trained educators and professionals.

Mentoring: Upward Bound provides one on one mentoring to participants at Upward Bound Saturday Academies. Students are matched with a mentor and have lunch conversation with a CLC college student. Mentors and mentees also participate in afternoon     activities with each other and other students. Students are encouraged to join this program. Educational Enrichment Opportunities: Students participate in educational field trips, tour Colleges and Universities, and explore career opportunities around the community.

Fun: Students are able to socialize with one another, play games in a safe and secure environment
