Central Lakes College (CLC) is very pleased to continue to offer PSEO eCollege for your students. CLC’s partnering high schools may continue to select online college level courses to offer to their students. While PSEO students have always been able to take online courses on their own, this is an opportunity for high schools to have the online college offerings in their registration booklets. PSEO eCollege courses serve to create an effective learning cohort within a high school building.
What is PSEO eCollege?
PSEO eCollege allows high school students to not only remain in their high school classrooms while learning with their high school peers, but they also are given the opportunity to take college courses online. PSEO eCollege courses are taught by CLC instructors for both college credit and high school credit. Online courses are now a common part of the college experience and this program provides high school students the experience of online learning in a high school environment while receiving dual credit. For additional flexibility, each high school determines the time and place for coursework.
How are PSEO eCollege courses delivered?
All PSEO eCollege courses are delivered to participating high school students online by a CLC instructor. Fall semester courses will begin on August 22, 2016, and Spring Semester courses will begin January 9, 2017. All courses use the Desire to Learn (D2L) learning management system and are asynchronous, meaning high school students have flexibility when they can schedule their work on the course within instructor’s assigned deadlines. (Courses are not self-paced.) D2L is the online management tool used by Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. Students are able to get course assignments, review their grades, interact in discussions, and submit assignments using D2L. All PSEO eCollege students will be emailed “How to Get Started in Your Online Course” instructions prior to the online course commencing.
What should students expect?
Students will apply to PSEO eCollege as a PSEO student. The deadline to apply for PSEO eCollege is May 31, 2016.
Students should understand that PSEO eCollege courses require at least the same time and attention as would a traditional face-to-face course. Also, these courses are delivered on the assumption that after an online orientation, students are able to navigate through the course site independently.
As with all college courses, successful students are self-motivated, responsible, committed to adhering to deadlines without daily reminders, committed to spending time on the course outside of the high school scheduled time, willing to be persistent with the online delivery method and good time managers. Students will be in the same online college courses as traditional CLC students, as well as other high school PSEO students. These are true college-level courses.
