CLC Trap Shooting Team enjoys a healthy lead over conference opponents

Central Lakes College’s Trap Shooting Club is off to a strong start, with its 15-member co-ed team shooting exceptionally well. Now in week three of the USA College Clay Target League’s six-week season, team members are determined to win their first conference championship.

CLC currently has a True Team Score of 417, followed by Wilmington College, Ohio, with 255. Wilmington is followed closely by Paul Smith College, New York, which has a score of 230. McPherson College, Kansas is 4th place with 153 points.

CLC team members are from all corners of Minnesota, and each member brings a lot to the team. Coach Erich Heppner and several volunteer coaches have been guiding the team since its inception in 2017.

“Trap shooting is a sport that necessitates a strong focus and lots of repetition before athletes can begin to league top scores,” he said. “The majority of our team members have been honing their skills since they were quite young, and when you combine those years of practice with the instruction of our volunteer coaches, each teammate tends to improve upon their average score.”

This team’s success is not just a product of this season’s efforts but is the culmination of many years of passion for the sport.

“We owe a lot thanks to the good shooting habits that were instilled in these students by their high school coaches when they were shooting at that level,” said Heppner. “We are also thankful for the support provided to us by Lakeshore Conservation Club and area businesses and service groups, as their donations and sponsorships have almost entirely funded our team.”
