Community invited to CLC’s Ag & Energy Research Center Field Day

Community members are invited to Central Lakes College’s Ag & Energy Research Center Field Day from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at its Staples campus, 26505 County Road 2. All activities are free and open to the public.

“We are focusing field day on five audiences: those who wish to learn about food production like orcharding and berries, those who wish to learn about the latest technology in growing field crops, another area is grazing and use of cover crops, and a children’s program for families to partake, and finally, those who just want to experience agriculture but have limited knowledge,” said Keith Olander, CLC Dean of Agricultural Studies and Director of the CLC Ag & Energy Center. “All are welcome for part of all of the day!”

 

Events include:

9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Drone flight demo.

9:30-10:15 a.m. Ag innovation plot. Includes a corn demo, plot testing various in-furrow treatments and nitrogen application rates.

10:30 a.m. – 12pm Byron Tour, including cover crops, ground water quality, land conservations, crop rotations.

10 – 11:30 a.m. Local foods tour.

11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Kid’s program. Activities are for kids ages 5-14, and include tractor driving, potato activities, and exploring technology/drones.

Noon Lunch program. Federal and state legislative agricultural update, with Senator Paul Gazelka speaking.

1:30-2 p.m. Wine tasting with wine made from CLC specialty crops.

1:30 p.m. Forage council bus tour.

1:30 – 3 p.m. Apple workshop.

1:30 p.m. Living Legacy Gardens ice cream social.

 

All day:

  • Tractor rides courtesy of Midwest Machinery
  • Water nitrate testing with Wadena SWCS.
