CLC instructor named recipient of New Directions Education Faculty Grant

Central Lakes College Computer Technology instructor Sam Espana was named a recipient of the 2017 New Directions Education Faculty Grant sponsored by the Minnesota State IT Center of Excellence.

Espana said receiving the grant is an honor.

“One of the goals of the grant is to develop two new Mobile Application Development courses that will integrate cyber security techniques and software development methodologies into a Secure Mobile App curriculum,” he said. “Another goal is to share the newly developed Secure Mobile App Development content with other Minnesota State colleges and universities. In the spring semester 2018, CLC will be the first Minnesota State college to offer three different Secure Mobile App Development courses. I thank CLC leadership and staff for their invaluable support.”

Those courses are: Security in Android Software Development, Security in Application Development Using HTML5/JavaScript, and Security in Application Development Using C#.

Through the grant, Espana will work with instructors from Ridgewater College and Pine Tech College to develop the curriculum for the new courses. The course content will be available to faculty at other Minnesota State colleges and universities. Espana will also present his project findings at the 2018 New Directions in IT Education conference.
