Next CLC Cultural Thursday to focus on the Middle East

IMG_2138 - Version 2Students, staff, faculty and community members are invited to the next Central Lakes College Cultural Thursday event, which will focus on the Middle East, at noon on Thursday, Nov. 5 in the Music Rehearsal Room E471, Brainerd campus.

Former Brainerd administrator Jeff DeVaney will share anecdotes and insights from his four-year experience as an educator and resident in the Middle East.

DeVaney served as an administrator in the Brainerd School District for 35 years, and he was excited to embark upon an opportunity to teach and serve as principal at the American Creativity School in Kuwait from 2010-2014. He is now back in the area and is ready to share his experience with the community.

DeVaney plans to depict an overall picture of what daily life was like in Kuwait. He will share his perspectives through a discussion of both the educational system and of the people. According to DeVaney, the Kuwaiti educational system has both similarities and differences with our western style of education for the teacher, student and parent. He was fortunate to be able to experience the creativity and motivations of children and adults in a totally unique cultural setting.

DeVaney will also talk about the three distinct categories of people comprising modern day Kuwait: Nationals, expats (professionals in the fields of education/oil/retail contrasted with very low paid workers who supply the majority of labor in most other fields) and the Bedouins (who have no citizenship with Kuwait or any other country).
