CLC satellite site at Pine River

Central Lakes College and the Pine River-Backus School District have agreed to offer college courses in Pine River starting around Oct. 1, 2011. Kelly McCalla (left), CLC dean of liberal arts and sciences, promises the college will offer CLC courses taught by local teachers with master’s degrees, as long as there are 15 to 20 students signed up per course. A local marketing group is to direct curriculum and publicize classes offered. The Community Education program at PR-B will train members of the community to serve as mentors and tutors for students taking CLC courses in Pine River. Although not finalized, courses may include General Psychology and Introduction to Communications, and credits for general education coruses will transfer to Minnesota state colleges and universities. Approved by the PR-B School Board April 18 and reported on the front page of the Pine River Journal newspaper, the pact is aided by a grant obtaiend by the Cass County Economic Development Corp. for a community technology lab and coordinator. Classes will meet in the former PR-B district office. “We’re adjusting start and end dates (for fall and spring terms) so that we can make this fit within the life of a community,” Kelly told the Journal.
