Football team is 3-0

The Central Lakes College football team remains undefeated in three starts after a 37-26 win over the Mesabi Range Norsemen Sept. 11 at Findorff Field in Brainerd. The Raiders coughed up the football on four separate occasions, including twice inside their own 10-yard line, and gave up eight plays of 15 yards or more. Despite that, the Raiders came away with a win thanks to a few big plays of their own. After the Norsemen returned the opening kickoff 57 yards, Stoney Burns responded for the Raiders, picking off a wobbly pass in the end zone and scooting 103 yards for the game’s first score. Michael Iverson broke through the secondary for a 72-yard run. Three plays later, Nick Grewe punched through the heart of the defense and into the end zone from a yard out, capping a five-play, 94-yard drive. QB Dominique Corder connected with Barret Powell on aerial scores of 20 and 21 yards, giving the Raiders a 28-6 halftime edge. After a Mesabi TD in the last quarter, the Raiders blocked a point after kick. Burns scooped up the live ball and zipped 88 yards, turning a one-possession game into a 29-20 Raider lead. Ryan Fay’s 41-yard TD reception put the game out of reach. Defensively, Matt Spoden and Greg Wright led CLC with six solo and four assisted tackles apiece. Frank Mays added nine and Antoine Gardner eight. Next: CLC at Itasca (Grand Rapids), Sat., Sept. 18, 1:30 p.m.
