MN Department of Natural Resources –Lake Index of Biotic Integrity Intern (Ecological Resources) Anticipating hiring 2 interns- Twin Cities Metro These interns will assist biologists in sampling nearshore fish communities throughout Minnesota for use in verifying an Index of Biotic Integrity. In addition, there may be the opportunity to assist with stream geomorphology work. Useful course work and skills include: ichthyology, ecology, aquatic plants, knowledge of database management, and other computer skills. We prefer experience in surveying fish and/or the proven proficiency to identify most of Minnesota’s fishes. Other desired skills include experience towing, launching and operating a boat with an outboard motor. Applicants should have a strong interest and desire to assist in biological survey work, able to work in a variety of weather conditions, and occasionally lift up to 50lbs. A crew of 1 leader and 3 members will participate in on-the-job training to learn natural resources management skills and put those skills into practice working on conservation projects in Wilderness Management Areas in the Brainerd area. Leader and Member positions involve physically challenging, team-oriented work while learning about the environment and networking with natural resource professionals. Service work is performed almost exclusively outdoors and may involve camping for several days at a time. Responsibilities: Corpsmembers will receive training and complete various conservation projects such as prairie restoration, GPS/GIS mapping, wildlife surveys, wood duck box construction, timber stand improvement, prescribed burning, exotic species management, wildlife habitat improvement, wildland fire fighting and emergency response.
