Steve Schluender Memorial Scholarship Fund
May, 2009
A scholarship fund in memory of Steve Schluender, Heavy Equipment instructor at the CLC Staples Campus, has been created in his memory by wife Wendy,
and family.
The initial donation of $25,000 will be endowed and the earnings will be used to provide financial assistance to a third-semester Central Lakes College heavy equipment student.
Steve obtained his bachelor's degree from Bemidji State and was a heavy equipment operator and worked for several construction companies. He worked at Central Lakes College Staples Campus as a heavy equipment instructor for 26 years until his retirement in August of 2008.
Steve had a firm commitment to seeing students attain their dreams of a successful career in the construction industry, and having the Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program flourish. He demonstrated strong leadership skills amongst his peers and was instrumental in acquiring funding for the program, particularly the west campus shop expansion project. Keeping abreast of new technology in the construction industry and how faculty could incorporate it into the program was always in his thoughts. He was admired by students and had a great rapport with many in the industry.
Donations are being accepted to this fund for any amount and may be sent to the Central Lakes College Foundation, 501 West College Drive, Brainerd MN 56401.
Central Lakes College Continues Its Tradition
The Central Lakes College Foundation continues helping students at campuses in Brainerd and Staples meet today's challenges by supporting them and the activities designed to enhance the cultural, educational, and learning atmosphere of the college.
"Central Lakes College classrooms are at capacity and state support for education is decreasing," said Diane Scearcy, Foundation Executive Director. "The Foundation works diligently at bridging this gap by providing scholarships to CLC students.
"Over the years we have seen our assets grow and most recently decline, yet we still continue to provide vital financial assistance necessary for student success. Last year, the Central Lakes College Foundation distributed more than $240,000 to deserving students and we look forward to continuing that trend."
At its May 6 meeting the CLC Foundation Board approved a 3 percent award from all endowments for scholarships for the upcoming school year. In April 2008 a new law -- the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA) -- was passed. It allows 501(c)3 organizations more flexibility with endowments. "This law and insightful measures taken by the CLC Foundation Board over the last eight years will allow the Foundation to continue awarding scholarships as usual," Scearcy said.
The Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. For information, contact Scearcy at 218-855-8129. May, 2009
The Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation has selected the CLC Foundation to receive a grant from the General Grant Fund of the BLACF. The amount of $5,000 was approved to support the CLC Random Acts of Kindness Fund.
We are extremely pleased to be able to add these dollars to our existing fund for student emergency assistance. The application process to access these funds begins in the counseling area on both campuses.
Kudos to Susan Wynn of the CLC Foundation staff for her work on this grant!
