About the Program

Do you like to work with beautiful flowers? Do you want to bring joy and happiness to people? Are you creative and/or artistic? Is your goal to be a successful small business owner? Students in the Floral Design Profession frequently answer yes to many of the questions above. If you answered yes to any or all of these we encourage you to consider choosing floral design for your occupation.

For almost 50 years Central Lakes College (CLC) has been training students to become Professional Floral Designers. CLC students appreciate the hands-on instruction and practice they receive, creating designs, growing flowers, taking care of plants, and learning how flower shops operate. The combination of a growing local economy, a state-of-the-art college campus, relevant instruction from well trained, experienced teachers, and a beautiful setting in the woods and lakes of central Minnesota makes the floral design program at Central Lakes College a wise choice for your future.

Marci Hoard
My name is Marci Hoard and I teach Special Occasions/Wedding Design in which the students learn all the traditional wedding designs as well as new trends. We also learn party, event, and funeral flowers. When I am not teaching, I keep busy with my own wedding and events floral design studio. The Brainerd Lakes area has so many destination weddings and I am having a ball working with the wonderful brides that are getting married here.

Jeff Dirks
My name is Jeff Dirks and I am one of the floral design professionals who teaches at Central Lakes College. My favorite floral class to teach is Fundamentals of Floral Design where students get hands-on experience creating beautiful floral designs. I really enjoy living and teaching in the Brainerd Lakes area because of the great outdoor experiences available here. Some of my hobbies are fishing, hunting, and enjoying all kinds of water sports on any of the 465 lakes within 30 miles of town. And of course, it is a great pleasure to see so many of our students enjoy successful careers after graduating from Central Lakes College.

Theri Wasniewski
My name is Theri Wasniewski, I am one of the horticulture instructors at Central Lakes College. I teach the Plant Science and Indoor Flowering and Foliage classes. I especially like the idea of using indoor and outdoor plants to create beautiful floral arrangements. The Brainerd Lakes area is a great place to live and go to school. There is more to do in the area than there are days in a week. I spend most all of my time outside the classroom hiking, camping, cross country skiing, gardening and checking out the native plant communities. I think it would be great if everyone used plants in their home and at work for beauty and function; sustainable by design!
