Frequently Asked Questions

What is Counseling?
Being a college student is an exciting and stressful time in a person's life. Many students face such stress as juggling school, work and personal lives; this all can affect your performance at college. Counseling allows students to meet with a caring professional that is non-judgmental and may help you to clarify your goals and priorities. Counselors do not try to 'fix' the problem, but possibly help you recognize alternatives or show a different perspective. Counselors are available for academic, career and personal counseling.

What about talking things out with a friend?
That is a great idea! Friends can help to solve your problems. A counselor can offer what some friends cannot; objectivity, confidentiality and lots of experience and training in helping people resolve their concerns.

Don't you have to be really messed up to see a Counselor?
Not at all. Here are some reasons why you might see a counselor at Central Lakes College:
Deciding on a major or career.
Assistance in transferring to another college.
Educational planning or assistance in picking out classes.
Lots of students who seek counseling services are dealing with 'normal' college student issues such as; balancing work, school and family, difficulty with roommates, parents, or spouses, or just needing to vent about all the pressure of being in college.
Students who are facing more serious issues such as anxiety, depression, or sexual assault are also helped by counselors here at CLC.
Counselors are also great resources to refer students to community organizations or treatment options.

How do I go about setting up an appointment?
Stop in to the career center C120 and set up an appointment, or call 855-8019 to schedule an appointment to visit with a counselor. Typically students meet with a counselor on a half hour appointment basis, but some concerns may require more time. Feel free to 'try out' one of our counselors, if that one doesn't seem to fit your personality don't be afraid to try a different one the next time. Our main concern is to help students, however they need help.

When should I go see a Counselor?
The list below, shows some of the concerns that many college students bring to a college counselor. Parts of this list were developed by the University of South Florida, if you check one or more of these items seeing a counselor may be a good idea.
