The Instrumental Music Department at Central Lakes College has been in existence for 21 years starting with a jazz ensemble and now consisting of the CLC Jazz Ensemble, the CLC Community Concert Band, The CLC Brass Ensemble and the newest addition, The CLC Woodwind Ensemble. The groups perform several concerts each year with the Fall and Spring concerts being done by the Jazz Ensemble and the Community Concert Band, and the Winter concert being performed by the Jazz Ensemble , the CLC Brass Ensemble and, now, the CLC Woodwind Ensemble. Other performances include "A Merry Tuba Christmas", performances at the Sertoma's Winter Wonderland in December, the Minnesota Fine Arts Festival, and commencement ceremonies at the Brainerd and Staples campuses. The Community Band also participates in the July 4th parade in Brainerd.

Membership in these groups is limited to musicians from age 16 and up. Whereas there are no auditions for these groups, the level of musicianship should be that of a competent high school musician. There is no upward limitation to the level of musicianship.

The Community Concert Band: TheCLC Community Concert Band rehearses on Monday evenings from 7-9 p.m. in theFall and Spring with a concert at the end of each term.

The CLC Jazz Ensemble: The CLC Jazz Ensemble rehearses from 4-5:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the school year, participating in three concerts.

The CLC Brass Ensemble: The CLC Brass Ensemble rehearses from 7-8:30 p.m. during the interim between the Fall and Spring sessions of the concert band, participating in the winter concert, the Merry Tuba Christmas, the "Twelfth Night Of Christmas" at a local church, and other performance opportunities as they present themselves. Membership is not limited to members of the concert band.

The CLC Woodwind Ensemble: The CLC Woodwind Ensemble rehearses from7-8:30 p.m. during the interim between Fall and Spring sessions of the concert band participating in the winter concert and other performance opportunities.Membership is not limited to concert band members.

Faculty

Steve Anderson
Steve Anderson holds a Bachelors degree from North Dakota State University and a Masters in Tuba Performance from St Cloud State University. He leads the CLC Jazz Band, Brass Ensemble and Community Band in addition to teaching Theory, steve andersonJazz History, Music Industry and Audio Recording. He has led the orchestras for many of the CLC Theater productions while maintaining an active schedule as a nightclub performer. He has written the music for a theater production "Yes You Can, Just Do It!", recorded accomaniment tracks for stage productions at CLC and the Franklin Art Center. He has several recordings out including the latest: “Phoenix-Up from the Ashes” which was recorded in the audio lab on the CLC campus. His next CD will be released around Christmas of 2012. He recently led the Community Band on a 10 day European tour with concerts in Prague, Vienna and Budapest. He has been active in the Minnesota Fine Arts Festival, managing the festival 8 times in the 24 years he has been involved. He is a member of the Minnesota Community College Fine Arts board, the Crossing Arts Alliance Board, and the Minnesota Music Teachers Association. Hobbies include boating, motorcycles, woodworking and restoring old brass instruments.
